The Kamkars began in Sanandaj in 1965 as a family band. Headed by Master Hassan Kamkar (violinist), it comprised Houshang (accordionist), Bijan (singer), Pashang (dulcimer), Ghashang (violinist and singer) and Arzhang (drum). Performances extended Iran into the Kurdistan and Azerbaijan provinces. By 1971, family started going to Tehran to study in the Faculty of Fine Arts. They performance with singers Shajarian and Nazeri. More and moer Kamkar children have joined over the years. Recent concerts have included WOMAD and Summer Stage and many European venues. The Kamkars have performed in Kurdish Iraq and, in 2001, for the first time in modern Turkish history, they performed Kurdish music in the cities of Istanbul and Diarbekr. In 1997, the band founded Kamkars Open Music Institute in Tehran.
